Canterbury is the capital city of Kent and the local government centre for the county making it the most important geographical and administrative minicipality in Kent. It is steeped in history being a roman settlement in the first century ad and continued to play a huge part in Btitish history from that point onwards. Notably, it was the centre of the second phase of the English civil war in 1647 after church services were banned on Christmas day. Religion has always been a central part of Canterbury's history, it is the home to the Canterbury Cathedral which brings in over 1 million visitors a year to the city and is also the location of Thomas Becket's murder in 1170.
Canterbury also sits on the River Stour or the Great Stour making it a beautiful city and you can even punt down the river. However, much of the city was decimated during the second world war as it was home to several army barracks and a convenient drop off point for excess bombs for German bombers on their return home. The city still retains much character though with some stunning tudor houses bordering the Stour as it meanders through the centre.
